Systém EU ETS byl navržen jako systém monitorování a omezování produkce skleníkových plynů v EU. V Budoucnosti se plánuje, že do tohoto systému budou začleněny i některé druhy dopravy - jako první to bude v roce 2012 doprava letecká.
